Diablo 4 Season 15 Secrets: Old Tristram, Hellfire Torch and Whimsyshire
The Season of Hell's Legacy content the patch notes never mention: opening Old Tristram, where the Prime Evil Splinters drop, and Whimsyshire timing.

The most time-consuming part of season 15 is not in the patch notes at all.
The season overview offers one line about rediscovering forgotten secrets. The rest was left to players.
What follows is what the community worked out in the days after the 15 September 2026 launch. All of it is player testing. Blizzard has not documented it, and a hotfix can change it.
1. Open the Old Tristram portal
The hidden boss is in Old Tristram. The entrance is not there, though. It is in the Imperial Library, where you meet Deckard Cain at the start of the season.
How to open it:
- Find the ten Deckard’s Journals scattered across Sanctuary.
- A very small green circle appears on the minimap when you are near one.
- Interact with all ten and a quest marker appears above the library. Cain opens the portal.
- If you are not sure which one is missing, read his journal. It lists the parts you have.
There is no shortcut, but the community has mapped the locations. Finding nine of ten and missing one is very common.
2. Collect three Prime Evil Splinters
With the portal open, you still need the key item: three Prime Evil Splinters.
They are Terror (Diablo), Destruction (Baal) and Hatred (Mephisto).
- Drop sources: a very low chance anywhere in the world. Tree of Whispers caches and seasonal reward caches can also drop them.
- Main source: the Torment 10 versions of the Diablo, Baal and Mephisto dungeons.
- Not a one-to-one drop: every boss can drop all three. It is not “Diablo drops Terror only”.
- Observed rate: roughly one per ten consecutive kills.
- One of each at a time: if you already hold one, the same one will not be picked up.
- Do not go early: those three bosses hit hard at Torment 10. Push to Torment 12 first.
For efficiency, Baal has the fastest run of the three, so many players farm him repeatedly. You also pick up legendary seals, Greater Affix gear and gems on the way.
3. Open the portal, fight, take the Hellfire Torch
- Put all three splinters into the Horadric Cube to craft Wirt’s Lucky Coin.
- Take the coin to the fountain in Old Tristram and interact to open the red portal.
- Inside is the hidden boss fight. The community calls it Echo of Tristram.
- The best drop is the Hellfire Torch, a Mythic Charm.
What the Hellfire Torch gives you:
- +4 to all skills
- resistance to all elements and all stats
- one extra Unique Charm equipped
- it also counts as a piece of the Nameless set
One item covering several slots is why people refarm the splinters even though it is tedious.
4. Three known traps
- Do not click around after you enter. The return portal spawns above and to your right, and it can be clicked before it becomes visible. Click that way on entry and you are sent straight back to Tristram, with three splinters to refarm.
- Two kinds of splinter. The ones used at the fountain sit in the consumables tab. Soul Splinters socketed into jewellery count as gems. Do not mix them up when mass-salvaging gems.
- The portal can fail to spawn. Players have reported using the coin and getting no red portal. It is a reported bug.
5. Whimsyshire: take the portal immediately
Whimsyshire portals appear at random during the season. Two triggers are reported: a rainbow portal dropped by a gem thief goblin, and clicking a Liquid Rainbow on the ground.
The portal only lasts two to three minutes.
Players who cleared the current wave first and came back found it gone.
The reason to drop everything for it is straightforward: the level is usually longer, and it pays out experience, loot, materials, gem fragments and season reputation. So when a Whimsyshire portal appears, take it first.
Beyond the Liquid Rainbow, the community is still looking for other leads such as the black mushroom. Nothing is confirmed.
6. Still unsolved: Annihilus
As of 19 September 2026, the community has not confirmed how to obtain Annihilus in season 15.
Watch out when searching: most “How do I get Annihilus” answers describe Diablo II’s Uber Diablo, not this season’s event.
Any page presenting a guess as a confirmed step is not trustworthy.
Where the facts stop
- Every step here comes from player testing videos and posts after 15 September 2026. Neither the patch notes nor the season overview documents them.
- Blizzard has confirmed exactly two things: that season 15 hides secrets, and that nine legacy uniques are permanent additions. The specific process is not confirmed.
- Hidden content is the part most likely to change in a hotfix. Check the latest patch notes before committing time.
Season structure, ranks and rewards are on the season 15 page. Soul Splinters and the gem route are on season 15 gem farming.
