Diablo IV Warlock Guide: Unlock, Soul Shards and Leveling Order
Warlock comes with the Lord of Hatred expansion. Here is the unlock, the hellfire-and-summons loop and the 1-70 skill order.

Warlock is not a base-game class. It arrived with the second expansion, Lord of Hatred.
Buying Lord of Hatred also includes Vessel of Hatred, so one purchase covers it.
Like every other class, expansions are licensed per platform. Buying it on PC does not unlock it on Switch 2.
What kind of class it is
Blizzard describes it as a caster who fights with hellfire and summoned demons.
In practice it does not play like a stationary spellcaster. It plays like a caster pushing forward behind a group of summons.
The loop the community settled on in season 15 has three steps:
- Cast Blazing Scream and let it travel with you.
- Summon Abaddon and mount it.
- Ride forward, dragging enemies along behind you.
Blazing Scream and the summons clean up what you leave behind.
The hard part is not damage. It is turning movement into damage. Standing still makes this build weaker, not safer.
Soul shards: Vanguard to Warden
Warlock has its own upgrade path inside the season mechanic.
| Stage | Level | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Soul Shard | 15 | Grants the seasonal shard; pick Vanguard first |
| Vanguard | from 15 | Summons Abaddon, which you can ride while pulling enemies |
| Warden | from 30 | Riding puts you in demon form and spends Dominance to extend hellfire summon duration |
Warden is the key piece. It keeps Blazing Scream, Terror Storm and Bombardment on the field almost permanently.
The cost is that you have to watch the Dominance drain.
The 1-70 skill order
This is the community-tested Blazing Scream route.
| Level | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1-14 | Two points into Molten Bomb, then Blazing Scream, then Nether Step for mobility |
| 15 | Orbital Blazing Scream unlocks, so Blazing Scream orbits you. Holding the key spins it faster and harder |
| 15-29 | Add Molten Bomb’s movement damage, Blazing Scream’s movement speed bonus and Nether Step’s extra charge. Slot Infernal Breath for packs |
| 30 | Switch to the Warden shard and hold summons up through demon form |
| 32 | Move every Infernal Breath point into Bombardment, so you can keep moving while it fires |
The community claim is that this route carries from normal difficulty all the way to Torment 12 without a rebuild.
Where it sits in season 15
On the pre-season test realm, Warlock looked like the strongest class outright. The live patch cut it back into the upper-middle band.
At the same time, one build (Blazing Scream) has already cleared Pit 150.
Two caveats when reading that:
- It is a community tier list, not a Blizzard statement, and it moves with every balance patch.
- A tier list describes whether a class has several viable builds, not the ceiling of one build.
The mechanics and trade-offs are on how to build, and the eight-class comparison on which class to pick.
Three common mistakes
- Treating it as a stationary ranged caster. Riding Abaddon is its normal state, not a gimmick.
- Ignoring the Soul Splinter downsides. The design is a strong boon with a clear cost. What you socket decides whether you survive high difficulty.
- Forgetting it is an expansion class. Switching platforms means buying again, and upgrading an edition does not re-grant unlocked content. The details are on price and editions.
